Requiem for a dream

In my first year, I had seen a few T-Shirts saying "You can take an IITian out of a Kgpian but not a Kgpian out of an IITian"
For a first year student who had just joined his dream institute after toiling for 1 year it was a dream come true.The T-Shirt was a hallmark of a true IITian or rather IIT-KGPian for which I did have a huge respect.The time passed by, now I am about to become a final year and now if I could, I wish to print those T-Shirts again, with a slight change though this time - "Unfortunately, you can take an IITian out of a Kgpian but not a Kgpian out of an IITian."
I strive hard to get that Kgpian tag away but I can't! What do I have against being a Kgpian? Well, after seeing some of the traits of kgpians I would desperately try and avoid being a kgpian.During my past 3 years at Kgp and intermediate visits to my sweet home, where I could meet a lot of level-headed, sensible, civilised, mature friends where I began to feel a bit out of place with time, I have learnt quite a few things.Some of them are:

There exists a world outside Kgp
That world rules!
Besides 'ch**t' there are other more precious things in life like formula 1.
Being civilized is not rocket science
A bit of formality makes no harm
Being marginally better than a few people here doesn't make you a god
Rat race does NOT exist everywhere, so the justification that 'poltu' is there everywhere in life is out and out rubbish and baseless.

Studs are the following people -

Who have a very low cgpa
Have nothing to do in life so they make friends with people from the other hostels
who are also equally jobless
Must not be well read or having some set of principles
Are parts of fests where getting in is generally achieved by licking asses of seniors
generally have a bike and they smoke
mustn't be a part of many extra-curricular activities

The intellectual IITians become so dumb and insensitive that they are ordered whom to vote for and unfortunately they do not have the guts to stand up against it.
Kgp is the only place people waste half of their life in thinking about crap like- Hall tempo, election pacts, no of heads and members in the fest per hall, general championship which is NEVER fought cleanly etc.The accountability, credibility and achievements of the people who control all these things is a black box!

Well, what I am writing here is nothing new.Not that there aren't many people who think this way.The unfortunate part is they are not united.They are least bothered. They are frustrated with this hypocrisy. Anywhere you go all you can see is mediocres holding on to the power.Why??? Not because the others can't but the fact is others don't want to.Why? Because they are smart enough to have realized that the rat race is not going to take them anywhere.

I have now started to enjoy it though.I am getting to terms with a new facet of a world that I had never seen before, maybe it will help me!It will teach me how not to be in an outside world.

At the end of the day, who cares? I got to see a lot of nice movies here, got to learn the guitar, the hostel life,could make a few great friends, late nights and many other things.When it comes to music, Kgp rocks! So I will just look at this bright side of the picture and be an optimist!But then the pessimist that has his roots deep inside my body, pops up every now and then when I try to be a bit happy, it jolts me back to my self! The utterly negative person! It sends shivers down my body...in about an year my odyssey of kharagpur would be over, my dream of being an iitian would have been realized but the pessimist refuses to fly away.He comes again and plays some melancholic music...I hope its not called the requiem for a dream...

I could see that everytime when you were here at Pune.
A very bold and honest post!!

Just get over the things man.
I still believe that we (the elite!!) can make something great out of what we are. Yes, I truly believe. Better think of that.

...Qualifying for Australian GP will start in few mins. Go and watch it.

@kuvi dada -
i seriously didn't expect such a comment when i was talking something very seriously.

for the most par i agree wid aditya...(and HOW !)...though i wud like to put this LOTR quote:
"...that is not for us to decide ..all we have to decide is what we do with the time that is given to us..."

kya re anna, kya ekdum lai chidela hai re tu...aso.

thing is, i was expecting this post the day i knew you had started writing a blog. i remember your mails in our first year with comments like "70% of the people here are in the non-speakable community". me n kaustya, both had agreed that "kuvlya needs some good company". :))

i do not know much about the kgpian junta, so i would've said u're a bit pessimist; but i guess "not kgp but just kgpians" pretty much sums up that you're not after all, a pessimist.

write some more kgp bashing posts. wicked fun, you'll agree. :)

-jugnoo bhai.

Aditya said...

he he, i am not really interested in kgp bashing man...the institute rocks!
as far as the kgpian culture goes, you can't really get away from "hum stud hun" junta that easily, can you?

and also, why is an iitk guy bashing kgpians?? i am pretty much sure that you also would be having those "bihar studs" at iitk!

Shanks said...

Nice title... and valid points but I think you just might have over-generalized...

and a touch of hypocrisy? [;)]

I guess that's inevitable.

Aditya said...

@shanks
maybe hypocrisy or i have changed a bit / lot over a period of time

u have written something i have known for 2 yrs. therefore i didnt find the blog interesting.

i know both of us think all this is shit but i think what we think is crap might not be crap in the real world. i know there's not going to be a rat race everywhere but there will be poltu everywhere. everywhere people will try n screw u. life outside kgp will not be as easy as it seems man! its a race where one has to compete with lions,sharks, the so called bulls n bears.

and some people are just happy in their very own small world of ch**t. cant say anything to those guys man..

this is the blog of a pessimist. stop bitching about life man.. enjoy!

kya commment likha hai maine.. waah waah..

i am enjoying.i have said that!
the blog is not meant to be interesting.these i believe are facts.
rat race is there everywhere but kgp can not be a rehearsal of it

nishant said...

some frust outpourings...

Aditya said...

@nishant - which nishant is this exactly?

also, you may call it frust but this is the anonymous says, i was expected to write something of this sort since my first year.

i am not exactly frust but at the same time i can't always blow my own trumpet and say things like "apan iitian hai, baki sab chutiye hai, apan studs hai etc"
also,i hope that you are not nishant katoch. and if you are not nishant katoch then i think it is difficult for you to appreciate whatever I have written

you are somebody who struggles a lot to write something serious; and; everytime you have failed miserably. I dont think you are mature for your age.

rohit prateek said...

Very well written dude...very much unlike what aditya vijay appears to the outside world...I really liked the part about FEST ORGANISERS and stuff..but please change our blog templet it resebles Satpathy's ...all in all a fantastic blog

Aditya said...

@anonymous - you can say it on my face dude...i won't take your comments seriously, nor can i harm you. :p

@prateek - thanks a lot!
and yes, i will change the template soon. ;)

nishant said...

well the tone of ur writings are not exactly happiest in the world, but yaa we all have had such conversations in the train...

Aditya said...

of course its not happy..what i said was i am not totally frust or anything ;)

abhinav said...

dude thumbs up to you. though it may sound very sarcastic what u wrote but im sure many agree that its true and i totally agree with you when you say that music is one thing that really rocks in KGP. In case you cant remember who i am. Im Abhinav Dhar i was in IIT KGP with you in JCB. My room was next to Katoch's. We played tennis a couple of times.

Aakash said...

i think Aditya u r very rite.This in my opinion is not pessimism but reality of KGP nd KGPians.

A very 'correct' post.

Anonymous said...

actually mr.kuvalekar...i am a bit confused after reading your post...i mean not about the actual content of the blog which i found to be the usual rantings of a frust kgpian(i mean everybody knows all that yaar kya nai baat hain)...i mean because of YOU writing it...these "traits" you talk about in "kgpians"(which you want to avoid)...i have never seen these traits so profoundly showing in any "kgpian" other than you...it is about time you disillusion yourself...except your close friends(who is see are the only ones commenting here)..most of the people who know of you think of you as a self-assumed "stud"(this stud having the exact qualities that you have described)...this blog would have been much better if it were a self analysis...rather the mess you made of it only strengthens peoples belief about you..

Aditya said...

@abhinav - totti, of course I do recall you. thanks a lot for the comment. :)

@anon

thanks a lot man!i am sure this comment will change my life inside out and will help me be a better person like you except for a fact that I would have some courage to reveal my identity.
also, don't you get it from this post that i really really don't care about what the kgpians think about me? (except for a few close friends, 70 % non-speakable community my friend is talking about is NOT a joke) I really cherish the company of my friends back home or my friends at IIT B who rock!

kahaan se aayaaa hai... I thot u were frm Pune!!! ROFL.... 'the frussstest' 'the self assumed studdest' n whatever other adjectives the other commentors put to ur name.... again ROFL....

u r well wisher... ROFL

kuvlya u r going 5 point something way.... but was interesting to read !- Kantya

Aditya said...

@anon2
it wouldn't require a genius to know who wrote that one.afaik, there are quite a few positive comments on my blog as well.
the actual thing is as socrates had said, "We all are fools but the difference is I know that I am not a fool" the only difference is I know that I am not a stud.as far as the frusstesht thing goes, I do not find myself stuck in the minority.
I somehow do respect you and would not like to qualify in the general kgp junta so thanks a lot for the feedback.

@kantya-

he he, 5 point someone vagaire nahi re.general tp asto ha. ;)

aphrodite said...

well written blog...:)...even i personally feel that most of the junta here r "limelight lusty self proclaimed studs " whoz only aim is to brag about themselves...

Wow, it is seriously wonderfully composed blog. Quite a rare thing mind you, as I have read quite a few blogs and only some are readble enough to be grasping at first read.

Btw, there exists a correlation between philosophy and cpi, or success, as I suppose. One of my professor told me once. He was himself a mediocre (but not under performer ofcourse, so he lost when we had a debate on philosophy :) )

Aditya said...

@ anonymous
he he, i am also a bit into philosophy but that doesn't seem to help me with my cgpa or cpi ;)

gayatri said...

hmmm..pretty gud a blog...
abt ur views..well its not jus KGP which is infested wit hypocrisy...but i think it(hypocrisy) is now an integral part of all our souls... everyone has dat mask on....evrything is just so pseudo...its how the world lives.... n i think instead of cribbing abt the fact...v shud try n strike dat perfect balance between blending in the crowd(wat u call rat race) n standing out of it...

1 question to u..
u talk abt mediocres holding power..if u think dat u r supreme y havent u ever protested agianst dis...??..i mean jus writing blogs dusnt help now...or duz it?
